How to Choose the Best Crib Mattress
December 16, 2019
Decisions abound when you’re expecting a new addition to your family. Your baby will spend a lot of time (10-14 hours or more) sleeping, so the crib mattress is an extra important consideration when setting up your baby’s nursery. Here are a few things to keep in mind as you shop:
Buy for baby
We don’t generally head for bed with enthusiasm at the thought of an extremely firm mattress. But unlike us, babies do need very firm beds. When you purchase a mattress for your newborn, make sure it’s made for baby and complies with the Consumer Protection Safety Commission’s recommendation that an infant mattress be thin and firm. Air mattresses and adult mattresses, for example, are explicitly warned against for safety reasons.
Think ahead to your toddler bed
The best baby mattress will convert to a toddler mattress when the time is right. A dual-sided mattress allows you to get the most out of the firm, baby-friendly side and continue to use the other, softer side for your toddler — either in the crib or toddler bed.
Make sure the mattress covering is waterproof
Babies sweat, spit up, and have leaky diapers, so be sure to buy a water resistant mattress or mattress cover. In addition to prolonging the life of your crib mattress, a waterproof cover will keep your baby’s bed safe and clean. Moisture can promote mildew growth if left unchecked, and baby’s rooms are often darker with increased humidity levels. Serta’s baby and toddler mattresses all come with a waterproof cover that protects your baby’s mattress and easily wipes clean.
Decide whether to go eco-friendly
The decision to buy an eco-friendly baby mattress is personal. Some parents place a high priority on it; some don’t. Serta does offer both options. While all Serta foam has been certified by CertiPUR-US® and is made without mercury, lead, heavy metals, formaldehyde, prohibited phthalates, ozone depleters or PBDEs, our Tranquility Eco Select Crib and Toddler Mattress is also GREENGUARD Gold Certified. GREENGUARD standards are among the most stringent indoor air quality standards in the world, and they’re based on available standards and guidelines from national and international public health agencies.
Serta’s combination crib and toddler mattresses make it easy to furnish your baby’s bedroom with safe, high-quality bedding you can trust.
