  • MARK BARON TO LEAD OPERATIONS FOR SERTA SIMMONS HOLDINGS
    Jay Patel Promoted to SVP of Manufacturing

    HOFFMAN ESTATES, Ill.—November 5th, 2013—Serta Simmons Holdings announced today the appointment of Mark Baron to the new position of Executive Vice President of Operations for Serta Simmons Holdings (SSH), where he will oversee the operations functions for both the Serta and Simmons brands, effective immediately

    For more than three years, Mr. Baron has served as Executive Vice President of Operations at Simmons and brings significant leadership experience in operations from his previous positions at GE, Lockheed Martin, and Hill-Rom. Mr. Baron will be responsible for planning and executing a strategic transformation in operations to create greater efficiency and effectiveness through a combination of shared resources and an allocation of distinct resources dedicated to each brand.

  • BOB SHERMAN, CEO OF SERTA INTERNATIONAL, STEPS DOWN
    Legendary Bedding Executive to Step Down after 25 Years of Leading Top Ranked Mattress Company

    [HOFFMAN ESTATES, IL]—October 1, 2013—Serta Simmons Holdings announced that Bob Sherman, CEO of National Bedding Company (d/b/a Serta International), has decided to leave the company to pursue other interests, effective today.

    During his 25 year tenure, Mr. Sherman drove a combination of groundbreaking product innovation, strong customer relationships, and operational excellence that led Serta to become the top mattress brand in the United States. Among the many accomplishments under his leadership, Serta’s famous “Counting Sheep” advertising campaign was named Advertising Icon of the Year in 2008 and Serta’s revolutionary iComfort product line set an industry record by being the fastest brand to reach $1 billion in retail sales. His career in bedding spans 45 years, from delivering mattresses in his home state of Minnesota at the age of 16 to leading the top-ranked U.S. mattress brand.

    Barbara Bradford, Senior Vice President of Marketing and Merchandising, has also decided to leave the company to pursue other interests. Ms. Bradford, an icon in the industry herself, has 42 years of industry experience and is the wife of Mr. Sherman. Ms. Bradford played a key role in the development of the iComfort series and was responsible for developing Serta’s branded collections, including Trump HomeTM, among many other accomplishments.

    “Bob has been a true leader in the mattress industry,” said David Swift, the company’s chairman. “On his path to building the leading brand in the mattress business, he also delivered one of the most successful product launches and some of the most successful marketing campaigns in history. We thank Bob for creating such a strong and lasting brand in Serta, and we’ll endeavor to build upon his legacy as we move forward.”

    Gary Fazio, the current CEO of Simmons Bedding Company, will become the CEO of the Serta Simmons Holdings. He will be responsible for overseeing both the Serta and Simmons businesses, which will continue to maintain separate product development, marketing and sales divisions.

    Mr. Fazio has 41 years of bedding manufacturing and retail experience. He joined Simmons in 2010 after the company’s restructuring. Prior to joining Simmons, he was the CEO of Mattress Firm for nine years before being named Chairman in 2010. “We have great people at Serta and Simmons. Together we will continue to lead the industry delivering innovative products, investing in all of our brands and providing differentiated services to our channel partners and end consumers,” said Mr. Fazio.

  • Serta International Affiliate Acquires Stock of Western Sleep Products in British Columbia, Canada

    Hoffman Estates, IL (March 19, 2013) - As of March 15, 2013, Serta International Holdco, LLC acquired the stock of Western Sleep Products Ltd, a Serta Licensee in British Columbia. The acquisition was made by Serta International's subsidiary, Star Bedding Products, Co. Serta International is also the parent of National Bedding Company L.L.C., the largest U.S. Serta licensee. Western Sleep's factory in Burnaby, British Columbia increases Serta International's ownership to three factories in Canada.

    Western Sleep has been servicing British Columbia and Alberta as a Serta licensee since 1972. It is anticipated that employees of the local plant will remain employed with Western Sleep, including longtime employee Denis Jones who will maintain a senior management role with the company. Delivery and service to local retailers will continue without interruption.

  • Serta® Challenges Consumers to Take the Serta Fitness Pledge

    In celebration of the NSF Sleep in America® Poll, Serta encourages consumers to take the Serta Fitness Pledge to lead a healthier lifestyle and experience a better night’s sleep in 2013.

    Hoffman Estates, Ill. (March 12, 2013) – It’s evident that sleep and exercise are needed for a healthy lifestyle, but did you know that more exercise results in better sleep?

    The National Sleep Foundation 2013 Sleep in America® Poll found a significant correlation between exercise and sleep, highlighting that those who exercise more often have a better night’s sleep than those who do not.

    The poll found vigorous exercisers have the best sleep at night and are least likely to report sleep problems, as opposed to non-exercisers who rarely have a good night’s sleep. The poll’s findings are summarized in the Sleep in America: Exercise Your Right to Sleep Infographic, which highlights the impacts of a lack of sleep and simple ways to improve the quality of one’s sleep.

    In order to get the best sleep, Serta encourages people to participate in the Serta Fitness Challenge to improve their fitness and overall health.

    To enter, participants must sign the Serta Fitness Challenge pledge to increase physical activity, which will help to improve their quality of sleep.     The bedding industry’s longest-running campaign returns just in time for Memorial Day with a new commercial

(May 15, 2012) — The award-winning Counting Sheep are back and making their boldest move yet in Serta’s new ‘Mattress Heist’ campaign, launching May 17th and running through Labor Day. The campaign centers on a new television commercial, in which the herd breaks into Serta’s World Headquarters and walks out with a Perfect Sleeper mattress. In their quest to steal Serta’s secrets, the herd accidentally highlights that the Serta Perfect Sleeper is the Only Official Mattress of the National Sleep Foundation and is designed to help solve 5 common sleep problems. A thirty-second version of the commercial plus an exclusive Behind the Scenes video is now available to watch on YouTube; an alternate version of the commercial, which highlights Serta’s 90-Day Perfect Sleeper Comfort Challenge retail event, will air from May 18th – May 23rd.

    The new Mattress Heist campaign features a targeted online advertising program which includes display ads, paid search, video, mobile and social advertising. These ads will drive consumers to a custom page on Serta’s website with information on the 90-Day Comfort Challenge event plus a customized store locator featuring participating retailers.

  • The Serta American Idol Sweepstakes Winners Go to Hollywood!

    Serta and the National Home Furnishings Association send winners to the American Idol finale

    Hoffman Estates, IL (June 22, 2010) – Serta Mattress and the National Home Furnishings Association made dreams come true for American Idol fans Andrea Donnelly, Melody Downey, Katie Miles and Kristi Moes.  These four women were selected as the Grand Prize Winners of the Serta American Idol Sweepstakes that ran from January 1st through April 25th.  These lucky fans and their guests experienced the American Idol Finale live at the Nokia Theater in Los Angeles on May 25th where this year’s American Idol was selected.  

    The Serta American Idol Sweepstakes kicked off the exclusive partnership between Serta and the NHFA, which was announced earlier this year, naming Serta as the official mattress sponsor of the association.   • The National Sleep Foundation And Serta® Join Forces To Promote Better Sleep

    Washington, D.C., April 15 –The National Sleep Foundation (NSF) and mattress manufacturer Serta are joining forces on a groundbreaking industry partnership to promote sleep education among consumers.  As part of this program, Serta’s flagship Perfect Sleeper® will be redesigned with input from the NSF and will be the “Official Mattress of the National Sleep Foundation.”  Additionally, the new Perfect Sleeper mattresses will come with an NSF educational “Guide to Sleeping Well” booklet designed to help consumers get the most out of their sleep each and every night.  

    “More than 40 percent of Americans report problems sleeping every night or almost every night,” says David Cloud, CEO of the National Sleep Foundation.  “One factor that most people overlook when it comes to improving their sleep is the importance of the mattress.  We recognized a tremendous opportunity to bridge this gap which led us to our partnership with Serta.”    

    The NSF chose to work with Serta, the second largest bedding brand in the industry, after an exhaustive “request for proposal” process that began last year.  The Foundation sought an established partner to collaborate on a new sleep education program that would be paired with a quality mattress to be enhanced with input from the NSF.  

    Together, the NSF and Serta will work to shed light on how mattresses contribute to good sleep. As part of the partnership, Serta will distribute an estimated 750,000 educational materials each year to help customers improve their sleep for life. The NSF’s guide will be a needed “instruction manual” for a very sleepy population, covering the basics of healthy sleep, ways to improve sleep, disordered sleep and when to seek help for sleep problems.

    Mayor William D. McLeod Proclaims May 5th, 2010 as Serta International World Headquarters Day

    Hoffman Estates, IL (March 2, 2010) – The Village of Hoffman Estates honored Serta International in a special ceremony hosted by Mayor William D. McLeod on March 1st, 2010.  The Mayor issued a proclamation to Serta President Bob Sherman declaring March 5th, 2010 as Serta International World Headquarters Day.

    This honor was bestowed upon Serta International in recognition of the company’s new award-winning headquarters located in the Prairie Stone Business Park designed by award-winning architect Andrew Metter.  Additionally, the proclamation noted Serta’s contribution to the bedding industry and the local Hoffman Estates business community.  

    The new Serta International World Headquarters opened in May 2008 and is home to 110 Serta employees.  The building spans 19.5 acres in the Prairie Stone Business Park and is 90,000 square feet.    Since opening, the building has received numerous architecture awards including the prestigious AIA award for excellence in architecture.

  • Comfortably Ever After: Vera Wang by Serta® Launches New National Print Advertising Campaign

    Hoffman Estates, Ill. – April 17th, 2009– Serta International and Vera Wang are launching a new national print advertising campaign to support the popular Vera Wang by Serta mattress collection.  The new print ad will appear in various shelter and bridal magazines throughout 2009.  

    “Bridal and shelter magazines are a natural way for us to reach our target audience,” says Maria Balistreri, Vice President of Brand Management for Vera Wang by Serta.  “This new print campaign will continue to grow brand awareness for Vera Wang by Serta while helping our retail partners drive more store traffic.”

  • Barcalounger Home and Serta Partner to Redefine Seating Comfort

    The seating leader will use Serta patented technology to enhance comfort and quality

    Hoffman Estates, Ill. – April 8, 2009  Barcalounger Home and Serta International will partner to produce a new and advanced cushion product using Serta patented technology to enhance overall seating comfort. Beginning in June, Barcalounger Home will be incorporating Serta’s exclusive Comfort Quilt® convoluted foam with Dacron® wrap technology into its line of chairs, stationary upholstery and sleepers.

    “This is the first time that a renowned company like Barcalounger Home has taken a patented bedding feature and translated it into a seating advancement,” said Bob Malin, Vice President of Licensing for Serta. “It’s exciting to have an opportunity to partner in a way that provides obvious and immediate benefits to consumers across the country.”

    Hoffman Estates, Ill – March 6, 2008 – Last October, Serta invited all those who have been touched by breast cancer to share their stories with the world, for the chance to win a $10,000 bedroom makeover outfitted by celebrity home designer Thom Filicia of Bravo’s “Queer Eye for the Straight Guy” and Style Network’s “Dress My Nest.” Now, two winners have been chosen to receive the bedrooms of their dreams.

    Tracy Marklein of St. Louis, Mo., and Sherri Burmester of St. George, Utah, have each been selected for their inspirational and uplifting essays on their experiences as breast cancer survivors. Needless to say, the winners are ecstatic at their chance to meet Thom Filicia, and Filicia is thrilled to design their much-deserved bedroom sanctuaries.

  • (11.11.05) Serta® and SOFTLY Give Honduran Orphans a Bed of Their Own

    Hoffman Estates, Illinois – Nov. 11, 2005 – 400 children living in severely overcrowded orphanages and shelters in Honduras now have beds to sleep in, thanks to a partnership between Serta International and SOFTLY (Securing Our Future Through Loving Youth) International, a children’s service organization.

    Aguas Ocaña de Maduro, the First Lady of Honduras, announced the gift at a press conference at the presidential quarters in Tegucigalpa, the capital of Honduras, in September. Joining her were other Honduras dignitaries, including Sister Maria Rosa Leggol, director of the Sociedad Amigos de los Niños, a nonprofit group that has helped to raise and educate more than 60,000 children in Honduras.

    “Words cannot express how thankful I am to everyone involved today. I think the faces of the children say it best,” said Maduro. At her side was 12-year-old Jose, who lived on the streets until three years ago, as well as 24 other children who would soon be enjoying the first real bed of their lives.

    Other speakers included Eloise Vincent, executive director and founder of SOFTLY, Bob Malin, vice president of Serta International and John Mussack, General Manager, Camas Olympia Honduras, Serta’s Central American licensee. “We are living in a time when the entire world is one Community,” noted Malin. “It is in that spirit that Serta International is pleased to donate 400 beds to the children in Honduras who most need them.”

    Serta donated the mattresses to SOFTLY, which coordinated the project. The nonprofit group gives mattresses, sheets, bed frames and Magic Dream Pillows (pillows with pillowcases decorated by children throughout America) to some of the world’s neediest children in its A Bed For Every Child (ABFEC) program.     “The children’s shelters in Tegucigalpa are in desperate need of beds,” said Vincent. “One homeless shelter for 36 girls I visited had a total of three mattresses. This donation will make a huge difference to these children.”

    In June 2005, Serta® celebrated Home Safety Month by hosting Bedroom Fire Safety events across the country. Working with five local fire departments, Serta donated 100 flame-resistant mattresses to each organization. The mattresses were installed in the firehouses or given to local families in need. Serta and the fire departments also hosted mattress burn tests for the media, to highlight the importance of flame-resistant protection.     Only Major Company To Make All Its Bedding Open-Flame Resistant

    Hoffman Estates, Illinois (January 21, 2005) Serta formally announced today that all its new mattresses will give consumers a critical measure of safety in case of a bedroom fire with its open-flame resistance FireBlocker® system. Serta is the first and only major brand to make all of its bedding open-flame resistant in the U.S. The company began its rollout of FireBlocker mattresses in December 2003, more than one year before a regulation mandating open-flame resistance went into effect in California on January 1, 2005.

    To honor its commitment to consumer safety, Serta placed a full page ad in a prominent position in the first section of USA Today’s January 21st issue. The ad carries a powerful “Consumer Advisory” headline superimposed over a picture of Serta’s popular Counting Sheep icon. The message reads, in part, “More than 700 people in the United States die in bedroom fires each year. Effective January 21, 2005, Serta became the only major mattress manufacturer to include open flame retardant materials in the production of all Serta bedding nationwide.”

    The ad then emphasizes the difference between Serta and its competitors, “Not Sealy, not Simmons… only Serta.”

    “By the end of last year most Serta’s retailers carried FireBlocker lines,” said Robert Sherman, president of Serta International. “Now the production process is complete.”

    Serta’s FireBlocker® system works by isolating the impact of a fire on the mattress and slowing its spread. This provides someone with critical time to escape and call for help. Serta’s FireBlocker technology is a proprietary system of natural and synthetic fibers in the outer layers of the mattress and box spring, containing no harmful chemicals.

    Over the last four years, Serta has conducted performance tests for its FireBlocker technology at Underwriters Laboratories Inc. (UL), and the results are UL-confirmed. These tests simulate the impact of a comforter and pillow fire on a mattress, and were developed by the National Institute for Standards and Technology (NIST) and the California Bureau of Home Furnishings. Serta FireBlocker mattresses pass the tests and meet the California standard, which is the most stringent in the country.

  • (7.03.03) Counting Sheep Scheme To Win Back Clients In Serta’s® New TV Commercials

    ITASCA, ILLINOIS – JULY 3, 2003 The Counting Sheep have concocted some ingenious schemes to win back their clients in a new series of national and retail TV and radio commercials by Serta.

    As the latest installments in its award-winning advertising campaign, Serta is launching two new television commercials, "Image" and "Couch," for both network and retailer use. The two 30-second network spots will premiere the week of July 7th, and run through the end of Serta’s 2003 TV schedule.

    Serta is launching the commercials as part of its multi-million dollar 2003 media campaign that will reach nearly all U.S. adults. The retail versions of "Image" and "Couch" offer Serta dealers the opportunity to leverage the popularity and recognition of the Counting Sheep and the Serta brand.

    The two spots show that the Counting Sheep are continually foiled – no matter what devious plot they hatch – by the enormous comfort that consumers feel when sleeping on a Serta mattress. Each humorous confrontation pits the Counting Sheep against Serta products, which are "So Comfortable, You’ll Feel the Difference the Moment You Lie Down."

    In the national network spot "Image," the desperate Counting Sheep take the advice of an image consultant who tells them how to compete against Serta’s comfortable mattresses that "get consumers to sleep fast." A national 15-second version of "Image" will begin airing later in the third quarter. "Image" will be available to retailers in three formats (:25/:05, :20/:10 and :15/:15).

    In the national network spot “Couch,” the Counting Sheep resort to sabotage to force an ex-client of theirs to leave his comfortable new Serta mattress and use their services instead – if only for a night. “Couch” will be available for retailers to tag in a :25/:05 format. 

    "The humor of these commercials underscores the message that no matter what the Counting Sheep do, they can’t effectively compete against the comfort of Serta mattresses," said Susan Ebaugh, Serta’s Chief Brand Officer. "Consumers tell us that they eagerly await our new commercials to find out just what the Counting Sheep will try next to keep people from buying, or sleeping on, comfortable new Serta mattresses.

    "In the three short years since we launched the Serta Counting Sheep campaign, it has become one of the most popular and powerful campaigns in the country," Ebaugh noted. "Research shows that Americans enjoy the Counting Sheep, recall the commercials and remember the Serta brand name as well."

    In its April 21, 2003, issue, Advertising Age recognized Serta’s Counting Sheep TV commercial "Penalty" (:30) as one of the most effective new ads in the nation. Basing its rankings on more than 2.6 million surveys of TV viewers, Ad Age measured the ability of TV viewers to recall, within 24 hours, the ad as well as the brand they saw during the normal course of TV viewing.

    In June 2002, the advertising industry recognized Serta’s brand-building campaign by awarding a highly prestigious gold EFFIE to Serta and its advertising agency, Doner. The EFFIE awards recognize the most effective and creative advertising campaigns in the nation.

    In the first new radio spot "Yoga," the Counting Sheep use a "relaxation" skill to try to reclaim a former client who is now a satisfied Serta mattress owner. In the second spot, "Moving In," the Counting Sheep gather in the home of another satisfied Serta mattress owner and ask if they can move in because they’re unable to support themselves – thanks to Serta.
