Memory Foam, Pillow Top or Innerspring? How to Choose the Right Mattress

Serta makes a wide variety of mattresses because people have an equally broad range of comfort preferences. In fact, we have more than 30 different mattress options for all types of sleepers. With so many different mattresses, we often get questions about the various terms used to describe them. To choose the mattress that best fits your preferences, you need to know the different types of mattress support and comfort options.

Mattress Support

Mattress support refers to how the bed is constructed, in particular the support systems within the bed.

1. Innerspring mattress

Innerspring is a traditional style of mattress construction in which steel coils (the springs) provide the basis of mattress support. Serta’s state-of-the-art innerspring systems are designed to provide proper support and body alignment. We use three different advanced innerspring systems to offer a range of mattresses from firm too soft.

2. Memory foam mattress

Memory foam mattresses are typically constructed from dense foam material. Your body temperature softens the foam, which then molds to the shape of your body as you sleep. Serta’s exclusive gel memory foam is an advanced material inspired by traditional memory foam, but completely different. Traditional memory foam has a reputation for being a warmer material. Our foam technology is infused with millions of gel beads that respond to your body for enhanced support and cooling comfort.

3. Hybrid mattress

At this point, you can probably guess that a hybrid mattress combines the steel coils of an innerspring mattress with memory foam technology. Serta’s hybrid mattresses marry our gel memory foam with an advanced innerspring support system.

Comfort Preference

Comfort preference also refers to how the bed is constructed, in particular the top layers of an innerspring mattress.

1. Firm

A firm mattress typically has fewer additional layers of padding on the top and feels less flexible than a plush or pillow top mattress. Firm mattresses don’t have as much “give,” so they don’t contour to your body like a plush or pillow top.

2. Plush

A plush mattress is somewhere between firm and pillow top. Plush offers less “give” but has more layers of padding on top than a firm mattress.

3. Pillow top

A pillow top is comprised of additional padding sewn into the top of a mattress. This construction creates a puffy, pillow-like appearance, thus the name. The padding might be regular foam, memory foam, latex, fiberfill, cotton or wool.

4. Euro top

A euro top mattress has layers of foam or padding added to the top, but the padding extends to the edge of the bed. The difference between a euro top and a pillow top is mostly visual. A euro top’s padding doesn’t have seams or appear puffy; it all looks like one mattress.

While these attributes don’t relate to foam or hybrid mattresses, Serta’s advanced foam technology also comes in a variety of comfort preferences. Check out our online mattress selector to find your best fit.
