There’s no such thing as a perfect sleeper. Well, except for our literal and super comfortable Perfect Sleeper mattress. But as far as people go, we’re all imperfect sleepers with wonderful quirks. But there are ways we can get the best sleep of our lives.

Here are some tips on how to get the best sleep ever:

Go nuts. Eat fish.

“Finding Nemo” taught us that “fish are friends, not food.” But actually, they’re both. Fish, along with nuts, flaxseed, canola oils and soybean, are packed with high levels of Omega 3 fatty acids that help us fall asleep easily. 

Let some air in.

A breath of fresh air is as just as comforting overnight as it is, well, always. Open a window and let some air flow. It’ll reduce levels of carbon dioxide, which is known for hindering sleep.

Eat smaller meals. 

Eating heavier meals before bed will cause you to toss and turn all night. No one likes working overtime. Your body’s no different. If it’s busy working on digesting your five-course dinner, how can it dedicate itself to getting you the best sleep ever?

Don’t sleep with pets. 

Hey, don’t kill the messenger. We’re not crazy about this tip either. But truth is, you’ll sleep a lot better if you’re not sharing your bed with the dog. The good news is you can get Fifi and Mr. Pickles the same comfort you get from your Serta mattress with our pet beds.

Turn off all lights. 

The more light in the room, the less sleep you’ll get throughout the night. So put down the phone. Quit Candy Crush. Turn off Netflix. 

Avoid spicy foods at night.

You know who else loves spicy food? Freddy Kruger. Okay, we don’t know that for sure–although some people claim to have had more nightmares after eating spicy food too close to bedtime. Here’s the thing: Spicy foods may cause an increase in your body temperature. This means you may sleep less soundly and, in turn, remember your dreams more vividly. (Ah, science.) So you might want to put down the Sriracha after sunset. 

Avoid junk food. 

Hey, we’re not judging your diet. We’re just trying to make sure you’re comfortable at night. Junk food is proven to alter your brain waves, which is like getting poked on the forehead while you’re trying to get some rest. 

Stay cool.

Drink chamomile tea before bed. 

Here’s a sip of information that might impress your barista. Chamomile tea has often been used to help with insomnia. But who knows why that is? Well now, you do. The fact is, it triggers an increase in glycine, a chemical that relaxes your muscles and nervous system. 

Trade your mattress in after 6-7 years.
